The packing list is the start of the journey

This packing list will help you prepare for your trip to Iceland. Iceland’s weather can be unpredictable, so it’s important to pack for all types of conditions.

With the unpredictable weather that created the local saying “If you don´t like the weather just wait 5 minutes”. We are used to the weather changing so rapidly that we can see a sample of all seasons in a day.

 

Clothing

  • Waterproof and windproof outer layer (jacket and pants)
  • Warm mid-layer (fleece or wool)
  • Base layers (thermal underwear)
  • Warm hat and gloves (gloves can be really important due to cold wind)
  • Sturdy hiking boots
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Swimsuit (for hot springs)
  • Casual clothes
  • Plenty of socks

Gear

  • Backpack
  • Water bottle (please don´t buy water in Iceland, our tap water is the best)
  • Camera and charger (If renting a car it is good to have a car adapter as well)
  • Travel adapter
  • Headlamp or flashlight (Not needed from May to end of July)
  • Binoculars

Packing everything you need is important

Personal Items

  • Medications (only in their original packaging)
  • Toiletries
  • Sunscreen and lip balm
  • Sunglasses
  • Travel documents (passport, tickets, driving license, etc.)
  • Credit cards (Get one with no foreign transaction fees if possible)

Optional Items

  • Hiking poles (only if you plan on doing long hikes)
  • Travel pillow
  • Eye mask (specially if you are coming from May-July)
  • Earplugs

Good apps to download for the trip

  • Parka – Useful for parking in the city and at many natural sights
  • Safetravel – Updates on weather conditions and alerts
  • Faerdogvedur – Road and weather conditions from the local authorities
  • Hopp – If staying in the city and want to rent a scooter or taxi service
  • Hreyfill – Local taxi company
  • Klappið – The local bus app, useful if staying in the city

 

Weather Considerations

Iceland’s weather can change rapidly. Be prepared for rain, wind, and cold temperatures, even in the summer. Check the weather forecast HERE before you go and pack accordingly. Layering is key to staying comfortable in varying conditions.
